FAIR Sues Maryland Over Community Trust Act on Behalf of 17 Sheriffs

Seventeen of Maryland’s 24 sheriffs joined a federal lawsuit filed by FAIR in U.S. District Court challenging the state’s newly enacted Community Trust Act.
The suit argues the law blocks cooperation with federal immigration authorities by limiting ICE detainers, restricting information-sharing and barring holds on removable inmates except in narrow cases.
FAIR says the sheriffs—about 70% of the state’s county sheriffs—have been put in a constitutional bind between complying with state restrictions and assisting federal immigration enforcement.
Gov. Wes Moore let the bill become law without his signature, citing implementation concerns, and the case now sets up a broader fight over whether state sanctuary-style limits are preempted by federal immigration law.
