July 2026 will bring BMW M’s updated S58 to the M3 and M4, with the M2 following in August as a rumored M2 xDrive targets late summer.
BMW M Ignite adds a pre-chamber ignition system with a second spark source per cylinder, aimed at faster combustion and lower fuel use under high load, especially on track.
The revised 3.0-liter inline-six also gets a higher compression ratio, optimized exhaust ports, new camshafts and pistons, and variable-turbine turbochargers, while expected power figures stay unchanged.
The timing strengthens speculation around the first M2 xDrive, which briefly appeared on BMW USA’s website earlier this year and would pair all-wheel drive with the upgraded engine tech.
If launched as rumored, the M2 xDrive would extend BMW M’s rear-biased AWD setup to its smallest M car while tying the M2 more closely to the M3 and M4 Competition xDrive.
