Tuesday’s termination notice said Scott Pelley was fired after confronting new executive producer Nick Bilton in his first staff meeting and attacking his qualifications.
Bilton called the exchange an “ambush,” saying Pelley “hijacked” the meeting with hostility and showed no interest in the show’s future success.
Status, citing a recording of Monday’s meeting, said Pelley also pressed Bilton over last week’s firings of former producer Tanya Simon and correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega.
The dismissal deepens upheaval at “60 Minutes,” where Bari Weiss named Bilton last week despite his lack of traditional broadcast news experience.
Pelley, a longtime correspondent whose agent did not immediately comment, had accused Weiss of “murdering the show,” underscoring a widening fight over the program’s direction.
