Newark Police Take Over Delaney Hall Protest Zone as 9 p.m. Curfew Brings First Calm Night

Newark police assumed primary command Monday night around Delaney Hall, replacing state police at Doremus and Wilson as the city enforced a 9 p.m.-6 a.m. curfew.
The second night of the curfew produced the first calm evening after days of clashes outside the immigration detention center, where protesters had tried to block vehicles and officers used pepper spray and batons.
Mayor Ras Baraka said the curfew will stay in place until further notice and called recent law-enforcement tactics aggressive and unnecessary, while activists said police are keeping them too far from the site to protest effectively.
The unrest began after advocates said detainees at the 1,000-bed facility launched a hunger strike over poor conditions; about 300 people are currently held there.
