June 9 loomed over a closed-door Washington meeting where Democratic senators largely brushed aside questions about Graham Platner’s scandals and projected confidence in his Maine Senate bid.
Kirsten Gillibrand said she was confident Democrats would win Maine, while Bernie Sanders defended Platner by pointing to nearly $100 million in TV ads he said billionaires had reserved against him.
Elizabeth Warren declined to discuss the controversy, and Peter Welch said Platner’s fate would be decided by Maine voters, signaling less uniform enthusiasm inside the party.
Platner’s campaign is battling reports of explicit text exchanges, a deleted Kik account, a Nazi-linked tattoo and resurfaced posts, including a 2019 Reddit comment saying Teddy Daniels “didn’t deserve to live.”
The June 9 Democratic primary pits Platner against David Costello, with the winner set to challenge five-term Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November.
