Tuesday at the Capitol, Chuck Schumer said he still backs Maine Democrat Graham Platner, repeating that Democrats will beat Susan Collins and retake the Senate when pressed repeatedly about the candidate.
Five reporter questions failed to draw a direct defense of Platner’s conduct; Schumer largely sidestepped whether the scandals changed his endorsement or weakened Democrats’ attacks on other scandal-hit Republicans.
Platner has faced scrutiny over a tattoo linked to Nazi imagery, resurfaced Reddit posts with inflammatory and vulgar comments, and reports of sexually explicit messages and an old Kik profile.
The endorsement matters because Platner became the party’s leading Maine Senate contender after Gov. Janet Mills dropped out in April, leaving Democrats focused on unseating Collins.
