New Jersey Republicans Back Thomas Kean Jr. Despite 3-Month House Absence

Tuesday’s New Jersey primary left some Republicans voting for Representative Thomas Kean Jr. even after his nearly three-month absence from Congress drew local frustration and suspicion.
Bill Morrissey, 75, said he was troubled by the secrecy around Kean’s disappearance but still selected him, arguing that skipping an unopposed candidate “wouldn’t have made a difference.”
Other voters withheld support instead: Mountainside Republican Helen Raczkowski left the ballot line blank, citing doubts about Kean’s ability to serve and accusing him of “kowtow[ing]” to President Trump.
The split reactions underscored how Kean’s unexplained absence and broader Washington grievances—from prices to foreign aid—are shaping voter sentiment even in a low-stakes primary.
