17,739 NJ Transit World Cup train tickets had been sold by Monday evening across eight MetLife Stadium matches, far short of the 320,000 available and the agency’s plan to move 40,000 fans per game.
$150 round-trip fares originally announced for service to the stadium were later cut to $98 with private funding, but Gov. Mikie Sherrill said FIFA still left New Jersey Transit facing a $48 million transportation bill.
Train schedules were still unavailable Tuesday afternoon even as fans were asked to buy in advance in one- to five-hour departure windows, with no game-day ticket sales planned.
Match-day restrictions will further channel fans onto the rail system: regular NJ Transit service to and from New York will halt four hours before kickoff, parking at MetLife will be banned, and on-site rideshare will be unavailable.
MetLife hosts its first World Cup match next Saturday—Brazil vs. Morocco—and will stage eight games in total, including the July 19 final.
