$92 million in NYPD overtime will be needed for New York City’s packed summer event calendar, Commissioner Jessica Tisch told lawmakers, with roughly a $20 million gap still unfunded.
World Cup planning is driving much of the strain: the department expects more fan watch parties across all five boroughs, while Tisch warned of vehicle-ramming risks and previously raised fears about weaponized drones.
Security operations will include screening 200 buses from New Jersey on eight MetLife game days, securing Midtown staging areas and checking about 15,000 rail passengers headed to New Jersey.
July 1-7 mandatory 12-hour shifts are already planned and could be extended as the NYPD also covers July 4 events, the NBA Finals, a major sailing event and annual parades.
Tisch’s testimony also exposed friction with Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s push for a broader World Cup celebration footprint, as police leaders argue the department’s resources are limited.
