Apple Ships 1.1 Million MacBook Neo Units in Debut Quarter as $599 Model Tops Mac Lineup

IDC said Apple shipped 1.1 million MacBook Neo laptops in Q1, the strongest recent Mac debut and ahead of the 900,000-unit M5 MacBook Air and 550,000-unit M5 Pro.
Just three weeks of availability still produced that total after the $599 laptop launched in mid-March, with early-April shipment acceleration suggesting underlying demand was even stronger.
The lower price point—about 45% below the entry MacBook Air—came from pairing a 13-inch aluminum design with an A18 Pro chip and 8GB of RAM instead of an M-series processor.
The U.S. took 44% of shipments, while India logged about 18,000 units despite retailer inventory shortages, underscoring supply constraints that IDC expects to ease this quarter.
Counterpoint and IDC say the Neo could lift Apple's share of the $400-$699 notebook market from roughly 2% to 15%, already pressuring rivals such as Dell, which introduced a $699 XPS 13.

Apple’s MacBook Neo Sells 1.1 Million Units at Launch, Shakes Up Affordable Laptop Segment
Overview
Apple's launch of the MacBook Neo in March 2026 marked a major strategic shift, as the company aggressively entered the budget laptop market to reach a broader range of consumers. By introducing the Neo at a much lower price than the new M5 MacBook Air, Apple recognized the strong demand for affordable MacBooks and aimed to expand its presence beyond traditional premium buyers. This move targeted new customer segments, including students and small businesses, and leveraged the appeal of a lower-cost entry into the macOS ecosystem, resulting in immediate and strong market interest.
