June 25 is the release date for Nintendo’s Switch 2 remake of Star Fox 64, which keeps the original stage design largely intact while adding a prologue mission, Challenge Mode, online multiplayer and mouse controls.
1997’s N64 shooter gets a major presentation overhaul: rebuilt environments, high-fidelity cinematics and an orchestral soundtrack make the remake look far more elaborate than the original.
The bigger change may be tonal. Nintendo has re-recorded and lightly rewritten the dialogue, replacing briefing screens with new cut-scenes that portray Fox as more mercenary and Falco as more openly antagonistic.
Those story and character shifts could prove more divisive than the visual upgrade, especially for players expecting a near one-to-one revival of the lighter, snappier original.
