36-year-old comedian Josh Johnson said he still sees the internet as capable of real connection, even as cruelty, misinformation and outrage-chasing have come to dominate much of online culture.
2.5 million YouTube subscribers, 2.7 million TikTok followers and 2.4 million Instagram followers have turned Johnson into a major digital comic, but he said he prioritizes the live show over algorithm-driven clipping.
Johnson argued podcasts, interviews and comedy sets are increasingly mined for provocative fragments, rewarding people who want to "get clipped" rather than genuinely debate.
Symphony, his HBO special that premiered May 22, extends the patient storytelling style that also powers his online stand-up, which mixes politics, internet culture and personal stories.
AI drew similar skepticism from Johnson: he said the technology has promise in medicine and research, but criticized models built by scraping human work while claiming to replace human creators.
