April youth unemployment in Canada rose 0.5 percentage point to 14.3%, leaving people aged 15 to 24 entering the summer hiring season in a weaker labor market.
Two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth pushed Canada into a technical recession, adding to pressure on hiring as economists warn the near-term outlook remains uncertain.
Statistics Canada said the youth jobless rate is still well above the 10.8% pre-pandemic average, underscoring how much conditions have deteriorated for younger workers.
Students faced an even tougher market in April, with unemployment at 16.0% versus 13.5% for non-students; a related report also showed 15-19 year olds above 22% and 30,000 full-time youth jobs lost.
