Rachel Ward said she is "past caring" about appearance criticism after Instagram users called the 68-year-old actress "unrecognizable" and said she had "aged really, really bad."
The backlash followed a no-makeup video showing her gray hair, which Ward said shocked people who had not seen her since her 20s and still expected women to look 40.
Ward said her response reflects a broader rejection of pressures on older women to stay wrinkle-free, sexually appealing and surgically altered, calling those expectations grotesque.
The former model and actress, who now lives on a 350-hectare farm in Australia with husband Bryan Brown, 78, said the posts also brought many new followers.
In a January Instagram message, Ward had already framed aging positively, saying life in her 60s is more fulfilling than youth and beauty.
