Cardinal Timothy Dolan, 76, marked the 50th anniversary of his priestly ordination on Thursday with a special Mass before a large crowd at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York.
The service carried added weight because it fell on the Feast of the Ascension, with clergy from multiple denominations joining Scripture readings centered on Christ's ascension and church unity.
Ronald Hicks, who succeeded Dolan as New York archbishop in December, delivered the homily and praised him as "a priest who is happy to help," recounting a recent exchange about guiding a friend into the Catholic Church.
Dolan, ordained on June 19, 1976, led the Archdiocese of New York from 2009 until stepping down and also took part in the May 2025 conclave that elected Pope Leo XIV.
