Jon Rahm said he "couldn't feel any worse" after a frustrated swing in the rough on No. 7 sent a divot into a volunteer's shoulder and face during Thursday's first round at Aronimink.
The incident followed a flier lie from the left rough that sent his approach long into more rough; Rahm said he tried to make an air swing over the grass, accidentally took a divot and immediately apologized.
The mistake contributed to a bogey on the hole, but Rahm recovered to post 1-under par, leaving him in contention as most leaders hovered around 3 under on the par-70 course.
Rahm said he wants to track down the volunteer and give him a present, calling the episode inexcusable on a PGA Championship setup he said is playing far tougher than some expected.
