More than 50 SpaceXAI researchers and engineers have left since February, including leaders in coding, world models and Grok voice, according to The Information.
At least 11 employees joined Meta and at least seven moved to Mira Murati’s Thinking Machine Labs, while the core pre-training team has shrunk to only a handful of people.
Those pre-training exits followed team lead Juntang Zhuang’s departure and have raised internal concern about whether SpaceXAI is still committed to building frontier AI models.
Employees cited Musk’s extreme work culture and unrealistic model-training deadlines that allegedly led to corner-cutting on Grok, while some departures were also tied to hopes of cashing out ahead of an expected IPO.
The attrition comes after SpaceX acquired xAI in February and Musk rebranded the merged company as SpaceXAI earlier this month.
