Two people aboard a Piper PA-28 were found dead after the aircraft crashed into a home in an Akron neighborhood around 3:45 p.m. local time Thursday.
Fire crews evacuated the struck house and a nearby home as heavy black smoke rose from a large fire, and officials said no one on the ground was injured.
The crash site lies about 15 minutes south of downtown Akron near Akron Fulton Airport; crews remained on scene Thursday evening.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause, which was still unclear, while local flight school American Winds said all of its aircraft were accounted for.
