Sound Transit Unveils Enterprise Initiative for Ballard Rail as $34.5 Billion Shortfall Delays Extension

$34.5 billion in budget gaps has pushed Sound Transit’s Ballard light-rail extension off its original voter-approved timeline, with none of three options presented last month preserving the earlier schedule.
The newly public Enterprise Initiative improves Ballard’s position by funding 100% of design work, Seattle Councilmember Dan Strauss said, but it still sets no construction date and no dedicated building funds.
Ballard residents and regional officials packed a two-hour neighborhood meeting, where speakers called dropping the extension unacceptable and argued the line would cut carbon pollution and deliver returns beyond Ballard to downtown and nearby neighborhoods.
Sound Transit says no light-rail projects have been canceled, but delays and cuts remain on the table as officials also float possible federal support to help close the funding gap.
May 28 is the next key date, when Sound Transit’s board could vote on the Enterprise Initiative and shape how the delayed Ballard project moves forward.
