OpenAI has hired an outside law firm to assess legal options against Apple, including a formal breach-of-contract notice over their ChatGPT integration, Bloomberg reported.
The dispute centers on a June 2024 deal that put ChatGPT into Siri and Visual Intelligence, but OpenAI says the features were buried and delivered far fewer subscribers and less revenue than expected.
Any move is likely to wait until OpenAI’s trial with Elon Musk ends, while Apple is said to have its own concerns about OpenAI’s privacy standards and hardware ambitions.
The clash fits Apple’s long pattern of souring on major partners—from Google Maps and Adobe Flash to Spotify, which helped trigger a nearly €1.8 billion EU fine in 2024.
