Eight years after "Cold War," Paweł Pawlikowski is back in Cannes competition with "Fatherland," a black-and-white drama led by Sandra Hüller and Hanns Zischler.
"Fatherland" follows Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika across divided, war-scarred Germany in 1949, marking another historical road movie in the style of "Ida" and "Cold War."
Łukasz Żal, Pawlikowski’s longtime cinematographer since "Ida," reunites with the director on the film after also shooting "Hamnet" and "The Zone of Interest."
The Cannes return extends Pawlikowski’s strong festival history: "Ida" broke through in 2013, and "Cold War" won him best director in 2018 before "Fatherland" premiered to ovations later on May 14.
