42,430 U.S. properties had foreclosure filings in April, down 8% from March but up 18% from a year earlier, extending a year-long rise in annual foreclosure activity.
28,414 foreclosure starts rose 12% year over year and 5,098 completed foreclosures climbed 42%, as lenders worked through distressed inventory amid high borrowing costs and affordability pressure.
Delaware posted the worst state foreclosure rate at one filing per 1,739 housing units, followed by South Carolina and Florida; Lakeland, Florida, had the highest metro rate at one per 1,221.
Florida led foreclosure starts with 3,505, ahead of Texas and California, while Texas led completed foreclosures with 640; ATTOM said activity still remains well below pre-pandemic levels.
