Braden Shattuck’s ceremonial first shot at the 108th PGA Championship turned costly when his drive finished near a fence, forcing a one-stroke penalty for an unplayable lie and ending in double bogey.
The local club pro initially hit a provisional because he was unsure the ball stayed in bounds, then learned the original drive had settled just inside the fence line.
Shattuck is one of 20 club professionals in the 156-man field and works as director of instruction at Rolling Green, about 10 miles from Aronimink Golf Club.
Aronimink is hosting its first major since the 1962 PGA Championship, with overnight rain expected to soften the restored course before drier, windier conditions later in the day.
Those changing conditions frame a marquee opening round featuring Masters champion Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth chasing the career Grand Slam, and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in the afternoon.
