May 29, 2026 is the theatrical release date for A24’s The Backrooms, directed by Kane Parsons in his feature debut and led by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve.
Parsons became the natural choice after his 2022 short The Backrooms (Found Footage) pushed the internet-born horror concept into the mainstream, with the original video drawing more than 76 million views.
The film centers on Clark, a furniture store owner played by Ejiofor, whose life unravels after a doorway appears in his basement, while Reinsve plays a therapist drawn into the maze-like dimension.
A24 has leaned into the property’s immersive appeal by reportedly building more than 30,000 square feet of Backrooms sets, underscoring how a 2019 creepypasta has evolved into a major studio horror release.
From a single eerie photo to a Hollywood blockbuster, what explains the terrifying global appeal of 'The Backrooms'?
How did a 20-year-old YouTuber turn a creepy internet myth into A24's most anticipated new horror film?
