Pittsburgh Farmers Market Returns to Market Square After 1-Year Move as Vendors Brush Off Safety Fears

Thursday’s reopening brought the Farmers Market back to renovated Market Square after a year at PPG Plaza, with vendors saying the downtown site remains the best location for business.
Recent crime concerns still hang over the area — including juvenile incidents and a deadly shooting — but vendors said they remain upbeat, while private security and regular police patrols were visible.
An April 30 chaperone policy for anyone under 18 was added to address public-safety issues, and the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership said it has zero safety concerns.
Weather is also pressuring sellers: one farm said stored fruit and apple crops have been hit hard across Pittsburgh, even as vendors said they are ready for the spring season.
The market will run every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering local food, flowers, books and other goods.
