40,000 UC Workers Ready Open-Ended Strike Across 10 Campuses Over Pay, Healthcare and Housing

More than 40,000 AFSCME 3299 workers were set to walk out Thursday across every University of California campus and hospital unless late contract talks produced a deal.
The union says UC has not met demands for higher wages, lower healthcare costs and bargaining over housing relief, while UC says its latest offer includes up to 34% pay increases over three years, a $2,000 bonus and healthcare caps.
UC warned the strike could delay medical appointments and sharply reduce dining, transportation and custodial services, though hospitals would stay open with contingency staffing and picket lines were scheduled from 8 a.m.
The threatened stoppage would cap more than two years of bargaining and follows labor-board complaints accusing UC of refusing to negotiate on housing and imposing wage and healthcare changes without proper bargaining.
