China Alters Rubio Transliteration to Admit Sanctioned Secretary for 2-Day Trump Summit

Beijing let Secretary of State Marco Rubio enter China for Trump’s two-day summit by changing the Chinese transliteration of his surname in official documents.
The workaround rendered him as “Marco Lu,” using a different character for “lu,” allowing China to host him without formally lifting sanctions that could still be enforced later.
Chinese officials and state media began using the revised spelling shortly before Rubio took office in January 2025, and the Foreign Ministry said in March it was willing to relax sanctions if he traveled with Trump.
Those sanctions were imposed twice in 2020 over Rubio’s criticism of Beijing’s Hong Kong crackdown, its treatment of Uyghurs in Xinjiang, and his support for the 2021 Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act.
