Steve Antonioni Recasts FIRE as 3-to-5-Year Camp FIRE After Saving $90,000

Four years after targeting $1 million by 35, Steve Antonioni says he no longer aims for a fixed early-retirement number and instead promotes “Camp FIRE,” a shorter savings cycle for major life changes.
The approach calls for following FIRE principles for three to five years to build a “war chest” large enough to quit a job, switch careers or take time off before reaching full financial independence.
Antonioni said he has used the strategy twice: first to leave a corporate job in his 20s after saving about $90,000, and later to fund an 18-month sabbatical from YouTube during which he became a father and worked on a book.
He argues the model fits 2026’s tougher cost environment better than traditional FIRE, citing sharply higher grocery and housing costs, though he says it still requires living well below one’s means and treating savings as personal “profit.”
The broader pitch is flexibility rather than permanent retirement: build financial breathing room, make a change sooner, then repeat the cycle if needed.
Does funding life 'resets' with Camp FIRE sabotage the compounding growth needed for a secure, traditional retirement?
Is the 'Camp FIRE' lifestyle a realistic path for average earners or just a new dream for the wealthy?
