“Butterfly Jam” premieres in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, giving Barry Keoghan’s Wolfcub Productions its first film on the Croisette as the actor returns after 2024’s “Bird.”
Kantemir Balagov’s “Beanpole” follow-up stars newcomer Talha Akdogan as a 16-year-old in New Jersey’s Circassian community, with Keoghan and Riley Keough playing relatives running a struggling family diner.
Keoghan said the father role drew on his own childhood in foster care and his experience since becoming a parent in 2022, adding that he felt protective of Akdogan during the shoot.
The 33-year-old said he wants to keep balancing commercial work with emerging auteurs, is developing more Wolfcub projects including a Netflix title, and would like to direct one day.
