Most adults are still under-consuming fibre, Dr. Saurabh Sethi said, welcoming the online “fibremaxxing” trend while stressing that the goal is tolerance and consistency, not the highest possible intake.
A rapid jump from 10g to 40g a day is the biggest mistake, he said, because it can trigger gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort and shifts in bowel habits.
Raw-heavy eating and fibre without enough water can also backfire, especially for people with IBS, chronic bloating or SIBO tendencies, while constipation may worsen if hydration is poor.
Sethi said fibre supports gut bacteria, fullness, blood-sugar control and cholesterol, but urged people to favor whole foods such as berries, lentils, beans, oats and vegetables over ultra-processed “high-fibre” snacks.
