30 days in military prison were imposed on a Nahal Brigade soldier after Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir spotted an unauthorized “Messiah” patch during a visit to the Sa-Nur outpost in northern Samaria.
The IDF said the case involved not just the Chabad-linked patch but broader breaches of military discipline and operational norms; the platoon commander got a suspended 14-day sentence, the company commander a reprimand, and the battalion commander a citation.
Parents of Nahal soldiers urged Zamir to cancel the punishment, calling the soldier a hero, while lawmaker Yitzhak Kroizer of Otzma Yehudit said the army chief should focus on militants instead.
The Nahal Brigade commander defended the penalties as a matter of military values, saying lapses in discipline during routine duty or combat can cost lives.
The punishment fits a longstanding IDF ban on unauthorized political or religious symbols in uniform, a policy Zamir reinforced last month when he called similar displays “a rebellion against IDF values.”
