Angela Averiett was charged with misdemeanor hit-and-run over a May 2025 off-duty crash on Interstate 580, and San Leandro placed its police chief on paid administrative leave.
CHP linked the incident to an unmarked San Leandro police vehicle assigned to Averiett after the other driver’s husband recorded the license plate following the mirror strike.
Averiett told investigators she was driving home, felt chest pain, used the center median to get through construction traffic and did not realize her mirror had hit another car; she said the pain subsided and she did not go to a hospital.
The family in the struck Jeep disputed that account, saying the impact was audible and that the vehicle had flashing police lights before crossing four lanes and exiting.
CHP had earlier declined to seek charges because Averiett said she lacked knowledge of any collision, but Alameda County prosecutors have now filed the misdemeanor case.
