May 13 marks the start of administrative leave for San Leandro Police Chief Angela Averiett after Alameda County prosecutors filed a hit-and-run charge tied to a May 2025 crash.
Prosecutors say Averiett clipped a woman's car while driving an unmarked Jeep with police lights on eastbound Interstate 580 near I-680, then left the scene.
Averiett later told California Highway Patrol officers from Dublin that she had chest pains that subsided; the other driver was not injured.
Assistant Chief Luis Torres will serve as acting chief while the city looks for an interim replacement. Averiett had led the department since June 2024.
