Dallas police charged Yeremy Alexander Zapata Aleman, 17, and Keyner Ariel Calero Jiron, 20, with capital murder after a May 3 drive-by shooting wounded a 17-year-old girl and killed her unborn child.
A verbal clash in a 7-Eleven parking lot allegedly escalated when the suspects followed the victims' car and opened fire; the teen, 22 weeks pregnant, was taken to Baylor Hospital, where an emergency cesarean section failed to save the baby.
Calero Jiron is accused of driving the car during the shooting and later leading police on a chase before crashing; investigators said they found cocaine, MDMA and illegal weapons in the vehicle.
Both men, identified by ICE as having crossed the border illegally, also face multiple aggravated-assault and drug charges, and could face the death penalty if convicted on the capital murder counts.
The case has intensified scrutiny in Dallas after Police Chief Daniel Comeaux disclosed he had turned down a $25 million ICE offer, drawing criticism from Mayor Eric Johnson.
