More than 200 servings of non-halal pepperoni pizza containing pork were served at O.L. Smith Middle School between Feb. 23 and March 5, prompting Dearborn Public Schools to apologize to parents.
Interim Superintendent Lamis Srour said the district found no malicious intent but called the mistake serious, saying human error led to Muslim students receiving pork during Ramadan.
Dearborn said it has added a second halal-certified food provider and pledged new safeguards to prevent a repeat in a district that has offered halal options since 2003.
The incident also drew criticism online from some users who said the case raised broader questions about halal standards and accommodation in a taxpayer-funded public school system.
