President-signed legislation took effect Wednesday, requiring the FCC to more thoroughly screen broadband companies seeking federal money to serve rural areas.
The new law aims to protect high-speed internet access in underserved communities by making sure funded providers can actually deliver promised broadband buildouts.
Amy Klobuchar and Shelley Moore Capito led the bipartisan measure, with Klobuchar saying it should help families connect to work, school, health care and business opportunities.
The act extends Klobuchar’s broader push to close the digital divide, building on her earlier Accessible, Affordable Internet for All Act.
