$1,600 a month gets Luca Martins an 800-square-foot, two-bedroom apartment in Rio—about half what he paid for a townhouse in suburban Los Angeles.
That lower housing cost let the 28-year-old content creator save more, travel more and stop working as much just to cover expenses, which he said improved his overall quality of life.
The move followed a 2023 visit to family in Rio after Martins, who moved from Brazil to the US at 13, felt homesick in LA and decided with his wife to stay.
About 25,000 people live in the gated Rio complex, where Martins said amenities ranging from a supermarket and mall to a gym, pool, spa and medical services also made daily life easier and safer.
