Laika debuted the first teaser for stop-motion feature "Wildwood" at a Cannes press event, giving fans their first look at a project in development since 2011 and in production since 2021.
"Wildwood," based on Colin Meloy's book, follows seventh-grader Prue McKeel and classmate Curtis Mehlberg into a magical forest outside Portland after Prue's baby brother is abducted by crows.
Travis Knight directed the film from a screenplay by Chris Butler, with voices including Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali and Angela Bassett.
Fathom Entertainment will release the movie wide in the U.S. on Oct. 23, while FilmNation Entertainment is shopping international sales at Cannes.
The film will be Laika's first release of the 2020s, and the teaser suggests a larger-scale fantasy world than the studio's earlier hits "Coraline" and "ParaNorman."
