Unreal Engine 5.8 preview is now available through the Epic Games Launcher, led by performance upgrades and new tools Epic says are more reliable, scalable and intuitive.
Mesh Terrain is the headline experimental feature, adding a 3D mesh-based system for large environments that integrates natively with PCG.
PCG now supports manual edits without breaking procedural logic, while the Procedural Vegetation Editor has been upgraded to build Nanite-ready, biologically accurate plants inside the editor.
MetaHuman tools also expand in 5.8: the new Crowd plug-in populates real-time scenes with groups of MetaHumans, and almost any human mesh can now be converted with simultaneous head-and-body conforming.
MegaLights reaches production-ready status in the release, while Control Rig Physics moves to beta and new Direct Mesh Controls extend in-editor character and facial workflow options.
