John Chayka said Toronto has set no deadline to replace Craig Berube, opting for a broad search even with key offseason milestones approaching.
The move follows a 32-36-14 season in which the Maple Leafs fell from 108 points and an Atlantic Division title to missing the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
Chayka framed Berube's firing as part of a larger organizational reset, not a direct indictment of the coach, after a year marked by defensive breakdowns and a poor fit between system and roster.
Experience in the NHL and in major markets will matter, Chayka said, but Toronto is also open to first-time candidates as it tries to rebuild around Auston Matthews, William Nylander and the expected No. 1 pick Gavin McKenna.
