Three holes into Tuesday's practice at Aronimink, Rory McIlroy stopped early after pain in his right foot flared ahead of the PGA Championship.
McIlroy said he ripped off a toenail Monday night to reach and burst a blister underneath, after the injury began developing on Friday and worsened through the Truist Championship.
The six-time major winner had already been limping on Sunday and moved up a shoe size to accommodate the swelling, but was still seen adjusting his right shoe and sock before quitting practice.
The setback comes with McIlroy listed as the No. 2 favorite for the Wanamaker Trophy behind defending champion and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.
