Windows Central reported Microsoft's next-generation Xbox, codenamed Project Helix, is likely being designed as a digital-only console, with a possible late-2027 launch.
A separate codename, Positron, could soften that shift by turning physical game discs into digital entitlements, though the report says details remain scant and speculative.
That approach would need limits to prevent a disc from being converted and then shared for duplicate access, a hurdle the report says Microsoft would have to solve to satisfy publishers.
Physical game sales now make up only a small share of Microsoft's console market, making a PC-like digital-first Xbox plausible even as disc owners may still need a USB Blu-ray drive.
