French health authorities kept more than 1,000 passengers aboard the UK-operated Ambition in Bordeaux after 48 passengers and one crew member developed gastrointestinal symptoms.
Three passengers were isolated in their cabins, a medical team boarded the ship, and samples were sent to Bordeaux University Hospital, with test results expected after at least six hours.
Ambassador Cruise Line said cases increased after guests boarded in Liverpool and responded with enhanced cleaning, disinfection and hand-hygiene guidance while cancelling shore activities.
The ship is carrying 1,187 guests and 514 crew on a voyage that began in Belfast on May 8; authorities said the outbreak was not linked to a separate hantavirus incident on another cruise ship.
A 92-year-old man died on board on Sunday, but the operator said he had shown no related symptoms and a coroner will determine the cause of death.
