Sony’s Xperia 1 VIII matches the iPhone 17 Pro with three 48MP rear cameras, but its biggest hardware change is a 1/1.56-inch telephoto sensor versus Apple’s smaller 1/2.55-inch unit.
That telephoto setup gives Sony a 70 mm, 2.9x zoom lens at f/2.8, while Apple stretches to 100 mm and 4.0x zoom with the same aperture but smaller 0.7 μm pixels.
On the main camera, Apple keeps a slight sensor-size edge at 1/1.28 inch and f/1.8, compared with Sony’s 1/1.35 inch sensor and f/1.9 lens, though both use 48MP stabilization-equipped shooters.
Sony also fields a larger 48MP ultra-wide sensor at 1/1.56 inch and 16 mm, while Apple’s 48MP ultra-wide is 13 mm with a smaller 1/2.55-inch sensor; the comparison frames Sony’s upgrades as a direct bid to close the camera gap.
