Tennessee Speaker Removes All House Democrats From Committees After Redistricting Session Disruptions

Letters signed by Speaker Cameron Sexton removed every Tennessee House Democrat from standing committees and subcommittees, except seats required by rule, after last week’s special session on redistricting.
Sexton said Democrats disrupted legislative proceedings by interlocking arms, blocking House floor aisles, using prohibited props and noisemakers, and encouraging protests with paid demonstrators and attendees.
Democrats cast the move as retaliation: Justin Jones called it punishment for opposing a “white supremacist agenda,” Justin Pearson said it stripped nearly 2 million Tennesseans of representation, and Gabby Salinas said, “I would do it again.”
House Minority Leader Karen Camper called the removals an abuse of the Republican supermajority and said no committee assignment would stop Democrats from fighting over voting rights and democracy.
The action appears confined to the House for now, with Sen. London Lamar’s team saying they had not heard of similar penalties against Democratic senators.

Tennessee GOP Strips 24 Democrats of Committee Roles After Controversial Redistricting Targets Black Representation
Overview
On May 12, 2026, all Democratic lawmakers were removed from Tennessee House committees, stripping them of legislative influence and sidelining their ability to shape or debate bills. This move by the Republican majority escalated partisan tensions and came amid a broader legal and political battle over Black representation. The conflict centers on a new congressional map, which opponents argue deliberately weakens Black voting power. The NAACP and others have filed lawsuits challenging both the legality of the special session and the new map, as Democrats are left fighting to restore their influence and protect fair representation before the 2026 elections.
