University of Utah Builds $33 Million Health AI Vault to Modernize Population Database

$18.6 million in new state funding will launch the Utah Health AI Vault, an AI-assisted computing system designed to speed population-health research and policy decisions at the University of Utah.
Another $15 million will fund a new data center and broader AI ecosystem, taking total state support above $33 million and expanding computing capacity for researchers, clinicians, educators and entrepreneurs.
UHAIV will modernize the Utah Population Database for AI use inside a secure environment, with the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the database and the Center for High Performance Computing jointly developing and housing the platform.
The university says the upgraded infrastructure should accelerate work on prevention, early detection, personalized treatment and survivorship while maintaining privacy, data security and ethical oversight.
The project builds on the database's role in discoveries including BRCA1, BRCA2, CDKN2A and APC, and also has $10 million in support from the Huntsman Family Foundation for the supercomputer effort.
