376 U.S. participants who stopped Mounjaro or Wegovy kept more than 70% of prior weight loss after a year on daily orforglipron, versus about 38% to 50% with placebo.
The Nature Medicine trial targets a key weakness of GLP-1 injections—weight rebound after treatment ends—by using an oral drug that mimics the same appetite-suppressing hormone pathway.
Researchers also found blood pressure, lipids and blood glucose improvements were maintained on the pill; side effects were common but mostly mild, including nausea, constipation and diarrhoea.
Eli Lilly-funded orforglipron is already sold in the U.S. at about $149 a month for the lowest dose, far below some injectables costing more than $1,000, with a UK launch possible soon.
Experts said the results strengthen the view that obesity is a chronic, relapsing disease, though longer studies are still needed to show how durable the pill's benefits are and whether treatment must be long-term.
