Antigua and Barbuda has put forward Ecuador’s Maria Fernanda Espinosa for U.N. secretary-general, adding a former General Assembly president to the 2026 race.
5 candidates are now competing to succeed Antonio Guterres, including 3 women seeking to become the first female head of the United Nations.
Espinosa served as Ecuador’s foreign and defense minister and led the U.N. General Assembly from 2018 to 2019.
Later this year, U.N. members are due to choose the next secretary-general for a 5-year term starting Jan. 1, 2027.
