April 27 arrest in the Dallas area led to charges against Luis Fernando Benitez-Gonzalez, 26, in the 2018 and 2024 strangling deaths of two women and two 2025 shootings in which victims survived.
Investigators said one surviving victim wrestled away the attacker's phone, and ballistic evidence tied the two shootings together before linking Benitez-Gonzalez to the older homicide cases.
Austin police said Benitez-Gonzalez admitted involvement in both aggravated assaults and the killings of Alyssa Ann Rivera, 34, and Alba Jenisse Aviles-Marti, 28, though he claimed self-defense.
Authorities say the Mexican national was voluntarily deported in 2020, later returned to the U.S., and is now held without bail in Travis County while ICE has lodged a detainer.
Police believe the attacks show a repeated pattern against vulnerable women and are seeking possible additional victims in Austin, Dallas, Houston and Hidalgo County.
