UVA Installs Tampon Dispensers in Some Men's Restrooms, Drawing Student Backlash

A handful of men’s restrooms in UVA academic buildings now have free tampon and pad dispensers, a move students told Campus Reform was unnecessary, wasteful and, in some cases, offensive.
UVA said the products are part of a student-focused initiative to provide emergency menstrual supplies, with the overwhelming majority of dispensers still located in women’s restrooms.
The university added that the men’s-room dispensers were placed only in buildings without gender-neutral restrooms and said the program’s ongoing costs are minimal.
UVA also pointed to the Fourth Circuit’s Grimm precedent on restroom access by gender identity, saying the practice aligns with equal-protection principles even though it was not adopted for legal reasons.
The dispute reflects a wider campus and legislative fight over placing menstrual products in male or all public restrooms, including a recent Maryland bill covering public buildings.
